Do I need a breeding licence in Northern Ireland?

Choose where you breed or plan to breed dogs. Answer a few questions to understand your next steps.

Answer the questions for this nation. This is an initial guide to your next steps, not a licensing decision. Your council assesses your circumstances. You can use this checker without providing contact details.

Do you keep, or plan to keep, three or more unneutered female dogs more than six months old?(Required)

Yes

No

Not sure

Count dogs kept across premises you operate within the same district council area, including dogs you keep but do not own. This reflects the statutory definition of breeding bitches.

Have you bred, or do you plan to breed, three or more litters in any 12-month period?(Required)

Yes

No

Not sure

Count across all your dogs, not per dog. Consider any rolling 12-month period, including recent litters and firm plans that could fall in the same period.

Have you advertised, or will you advertise, puppies from three or more litters for sale in any 12-month period?(Required)

Yes

No

Not sure

Count the litters represented in the advertisements, not the number of individual adverts. Consider the relevant premises described above.

Have you supplied, or will you supply, puppies from three or more litters in any 12-month period?(Required)

Yes

No

Not sure

Include puppies sold, given away or otherwise supplied from the relevant premises. This can differ from the number of litters you bred yourself.

Do you advertise, or plan to advertise, a business of breeding or selling puppies?(Required)

Yes

No

Not sure

This is a separate route from the three-litter tests. Choose Not sure if the nature of your advertising is unclear.

Could a registered charity or qualifying hunt-club exclusion apply?(Required)

Yes

No

Not sure

Select Not sure if relevant. This checker does not determine special exclusions.
