Our recent survey conducted among our members who are all licensed dog breeders is starting to show some vital data on the key challenges and concerns they are faced with.
The survey, aimed at understanding experiences with regulations and their general perceptions of the industry, has highlighted significant issues regarding costs, regulatory inconsistencies, and support needs.
Key Findings: Rising Costs and Unfair Licensing Requirements
One of the most prevalent concerns was the rising cost of compliance. A significant majority reported that the costs associated with being a licensed breeder are increasing. Many breeders also felt that the licensing requirements are not always fair or reasonable, with more than half the respondants expressing dissatisfaction in this regard. The rising financial burden was cited as a major challenge, affecting the sustainability of their breeding operations.
Inconsistencies in Enforcement
Another common issue highlighted by breeders was the inconsistency in enforcement across different local authorities. Many respondents reported that they had encountered differences in how regulations are enforced, leading to confusion and difficulties in compliance. These inconsistencies make it challenging for breeders to navigate the licensing process effectively and contribute to a sense of unfair treatment within the industry.
Competing with Unlicensed Breeders
Licensed breeders are also facing tough competition from unlicensed breeders. Many respondents reported that unlicensed breeders are undermining their efforts by operating without oversight, leading to unfair advantages. Licensed breeders, who adhere to strict animal welfare standards and comply with regulations, often find it difficult to compete with those who bypass these requirements.
The Need for Support and Community
The survey also revealed a strong desire for better support and community among breeders. Many respondents indicated that they feel isolated in their work, with limited access to resources or peer networks. There was a clear interest in establishing an association to represent licensed breeders, with breeders expressing a need for a platform to network, share knowledge, and collectively advocate for fairer regulations.
Moving Forward: Addressing the Challenges
Whilst the survey is ongoing and we’re asking all new members to complete it, the findings of the survey underscore the need for significant changes in the licensing and regulatory environment for dog breeding.
Breeders are calling for greater consistency in enforcement, reduced administrative burdens, and increased transparency in licensing costs. They are also seeking more opportunities to connect with fellow breeders and share best practices.
One of our first tasks has been to establish a dedicated support network, providing licensed breeders with the representation they need. Such an initiative could foster a stronger sense of community and help breeders navigate the complex regulatory landscape more effectively and project a louder voice to influence change. Applications open here.
Our second task was to invest in an online platform to simplify compliance management & paperwork, enabling breeders to connect digitally with their local authority. Visit CPD courses available
We have decided to make this platform free for local authorites as we understand the red-tape involved in procuring such as system. Local authorites can connect with their breeders, safe in the knowledge that the compliance management is updated inline with the regulations and proving conisistancy across all boroughs.
Our third task has been through education with CPD courses available and new breeder CPD courses available. We have started to partner with leading organisations to provide expert-led workshops and training sessions. These partnerships are helping us ensure that breeders have access to the best resources and knowledge to meet and exceed welfare standards.
As the conversation around animal welfare and ethical breeding continues to evolve, it is crucial that the voices of licensed breeders are heard and their concerns addressed. By working together, breeders, regulators, and stakeholders can create a more equitable and supportive environment for everyone involved.
